Allergy Research Findings Published by Canway President

When President Andre Rayner introduced Canway's leadership team at the end of last school year (Ari Alvidrez as Engagement Vice President, and Mihlaan Selvaretnam as Marketing Vice President) he also announced an expansion of Canway's focus to youth well being in general. As Andre wrote at that time:

The three of us believe that there is an opportunity to expand Canway Youth’s concerns from topics such as anxiety and depression among students to matters affecting youth well being more generally. According to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, “more than 1 in 4 U.S. children reported having a seasonal allergy, eczema, or food allergy in 2021,” and so areas of interest may include how allergies affect students among other research areas such as how food intake choices and gut health impact mental well being.

Congratulations are in order as Andre is the co-lead author of a peer-reviewed paper published on 11/21/2023 by the International Archives of Allergy and Immunology journal. The paper's title is "Applying Artificial Intelligence to Identify Common Targets for Treatment of Asthma, Eczema, and Food Allergy" and is a great example of potential benefits from application of AI and data science to make progress in science. As the paper's conclusion indicates "Altogether, our study dissects the shared pathophysiology of allergic disorders and reveals the power of artificial intelligence in the exploration of novel therapeutic targets."
