Many of our fellow seniors have just gone through the wrenching process of college applications and admissions or rejections. Some of us are thrilled, others may be dejected, and everything in between.
But before we focus on the end of high school and graduation celebrations it might do us good to examine what the experience has meant, and what to be grateful for:
First, with thanks for even having the chance to apply and attend college. This is a privilege for which we should give thanks.
Second, with an open mind searching for truth and understanding.
Third, in reflection to examine what the process should teach us, and asking what it may be saying about what we're called to do.
Fourth, correcting past errors and determining to recognize our own flaws that we may have a chance to improve.
Fifth and finally, with an eye toward the future, gratefully distilling what we've learned about ourselves to set a future course where we may succeed through service.
It's a really good feeling to be able to loosen up and have more fun, but it's also important to practice good habits that kept you succeeding through high school. It's not too early to reach out to people at your college and even other incoming students to get a sense of who you'll be with. One thing that I've heard after talking to a lot of alumni and parents is that the college is still really just a part of the experience, and it's truly up to the you to define your path in it. Best of luck!
