Do less. No, seriously!
We all know why we do endless AP tests and competitions on top of everything else:
Some of them we're actually interested in
Others we do because of the arms race with our parents' friend's kids
And finally others because of a strange competition with ourselves
Sometimes great wisdom comes from kids too young to have a filter. Recently I heard a discussion a parent and a young kid that went like this (names changed to protect the guilty):
Parent: "Why can't you be more like Justin? Justin is in the robotics team, plays violin and competes in AMC math, debate, and swimming."
Middle schooler: "Well, those are things you want, not the things I want."
I almost spit my soup out through my nose! Many of us in high school and college wish we were that brave and that certain about the difference between our parents' dreams and our own as that middle schooler.
And seriously, some of the happier students I know found a way to look at the endless list of things that their parents, families, and peers pressured them to do, and asked themselves "Are those the things I want?" That's the first step to gain the courage to cross out the ones that are just a source of stress.
